“World-class Chic”

Bringing in to the Philippine market a taste of glamour and class that is widely accepted in 30 other countries is a group of Filipino Chinese businessmen who understands the artistic beauty of home elegance.

Designed and manufactured entirely in Hong Kong and China, Dickson Furniture was brought to the Philippines by Edison Laude with his family and comrades.

“It started as a hobby and eventually became a steady endeavor,” shared by Mr. Edison Laude, proprietor of Dickson Furniture Philippine branch.

The group was in China for another business but when they saw the products of Dickson and learned that its still not yet distributed in the country they decided to import the magnificent pieces and let the Filipino clients experience the grandeur of Dickson made furniture’s.

Dickson showroom is situated in Greenhills San Juan and according to Mr. Laude to get the store known is the biggest challenge. First are visibility problems because the shop was above ground level and they only rely on the dependable signage pointing towards the store direction. But despite its not very strategic location, Dickson is still one of the best places to go in terms of home furnishings. Clients from farther provinces and in the Metro visit the shop and even ship their chosen pieces to their homes in the province.

The advertising and marketing strategy of the store involves promotion in the newspaper and flyers give away but more than that, the word of mouth became a powerful tool for the company. Product users of the Dickson furniture became walking advertisements testifying that the product is design driven, functional and most of all durable enough to stand the test of time. Competitive not only in quality and resilience but also in price.

Raw materials used came from different countries across the globe. The wood was imported from Russia and other Scandinavian countries, the paint and fabric was from Italy and the hardware was from Germany, other parts came from China and of course the labor is from China. The finishing’s were perfected because the products were carefully machine crafted.

The Philippine franchise is just a year old but the main branch in China was established in 1981. Through the milestones it has surpassed Dickson consistently manufactures top of the line house wares that parallel with world-class industry standard.

With over twenty years of producing optimum home fittings, Dickson continues to awe the global platform of furniture industry having 30 countries as its audience. More and more stylish homes were designed through the minimalist ideas of the company leveraging with only the best.

When asked what makes Dickson furniture special, Mr. Laude in his confident tone ended with a short phrase that already says it all. “ Dickson Furniture is one of a kind.”

Corporate PR for Manila FAME International
Published in Philippine Daily Inquirer and Manila Bulletin's Lifestyle Section.

Eco Design Revolution takes center stage at Manila FAME International

The green light is now turned on as Philippine designers and manufacturers stage another edition of Manila F.A.M.E International, (16-19 October 2008, SMX Convention Center Manila Philippines) Asia’s premier design destination. Manila FAME is the flagship project of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions, an attached agency of the Department of Trade and Industry.

Bringing top of the line designs and quality home and fashion pieces for the past 25 years, the bi-annual trade event is once again set to showcase the country’s design flair only making it more exciting by using eco-friendly and sustainable materials such as abaca, rattan, capiz and many others. Since last year the industry is supporting the Go Green scheme giving back mother earth her worth.

The brazen design of the show embraces sustainability by tapping all the unique and indigenous raw materials found in the Philippine islands. Apart from the existing raw materials, recyclable materials like newspapers, glass and scrap metals were also turned into fine furniture, unique home accents and chic fashion and holiday décor making Manila F.A.M.E. International a hive of all things creative and innovative.

This edition’s designer consultants who are tasked to echo the green wave are Tes Pasola and Reimon Gutierrez together with Milo Naval as the over-all creative director. For fashion, Filipino designers Ivan Aseron and Joey Samson are this years’ merchandise consultants. Their lucrative styles have escalated Fame’s look attracting buyers from various countries like USA, Japan, Italy, Hong Kong Germany and Australia.

The Furnishings and Apparel Manufacturers Exchange, more known as the Manila F.A.M.E International is yet again another quality shopping spree for big names in the industry with the likes of Detlef Klatt of German company O Living and Australian retailers Barbara and John Hermon of Hermon and Hermon who frequently come to source at the show. Over the years, brands such as Armani Casa, Pottery Barn, Tangs, Robinsons, Harrods and Papaya have made Manila Fame their best-kept secret sourcing fair.

Not just a platform for international exhibition, Fame also serve as the link between the Philippine companies and the local and foreign design luminaries since 1983. The show’s Merchandise Design Consultancy Program or MDCP is a collaborative effort of designers and manufacturers in creating new products for the discerning worldwide market.

Manila F.A.M.E International is an accredited event of the UFI, a Paris-based organization of leading trade show organizers and major international associations in the exhibitions industry. A number of exhibitors in the show were also recognized by Japan’s Good Design Award, Red Dot, the Unesco-AHPADA Seal of Excellence for Handicraft products in Southeast Asia and the International Design Yearbook.

Green Goes Global

The Green campaign is turning to be a global phenomenon. As the global awareness fever continues to stretch to other sectors like the global entertainment industry, a group of actors tagged as the Actors Guild organized a Malibu Beach Party on the 4th of July 2008 where Manila F.A.M.E. exhibitor Natures Legacy’s eco-friendly products were showcased. Natures Legacy from Cebu is renowned in making eco-art products, with some of their collections such as the green coffee table and stool made of Naturescast recycled resin and lacquer and a Naturescast chair made up of acrylic and plywood gracing Hollywood parties.

From the Go Green campaign launched in October 2007, Manila F.A.M.E International October 2008 edition is making the green greener. According to Mr. Pete Delantar of Natures Legacy, being green is not only the product or the process, it also includes a lot of other things like manufacturing process, carbon footprint measurement, energy saving program, facility and environment management, community development program, recycling, water conservation and many more.

After a year of highlighting the green perspective, the industry now calls for a stronger campaign in greening the export and trade industry. A fair trade with a green tag is not enough, buyers now ought to go for companies who follow the green standard. In order to tap the growing US$ 600 billion greenfluenced market globally, Mr. Delantar emphasized that trainings and workshops should be available to certify more green companies.

Visit Manila F.A.M.E International and discover how local manufacturers embrace the green wave for more exciting and eco inspired design-driven pieces

Wedding Day Feng Shui
February 2008

Walking down the aisle is the door to another vocation. It’s a celebration that must be immortalized by starting the beginning of forever with the right ingredients.

Which direction should the bride walk? What would be the color of the flower girls and bridesmaids dresses? What would be the auspicious time and date for a wedding? To make sure that everything will guide the couple into achieving lifetime happiness, Lets apply Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese tradition of organizing important occasions to attain positive vibrations.

According to 4 year Feng Shui expert Benito Borras, 2008 is tagged, as the Flower of Romance. It will be a good time for saying I do especially for lovers born under the sign of Pig, Rabbit and Goat whose romantic escapades would be very lucky this year.

To those who wishes to tie the knot on this year of the earth rat, here are some helpful tips from our Chinese friends on how to attract eternal happiness for a marriage:

Color Motif for 2008

Colors excite the celebration. But in Feng Shui, the right hue and blend may result to years of luck. For 2008, two significant elemental signs can bolster some decisions for the year – Earth and Water. Each element has a corresponding color, Yellow for Earth and Blue for water. Color combinations of both elements also attract the forces of both earth and water. That means the contemporary color of the year is Brown or other pastel colors that can be derived from the union of the two elements.

Aside from the elemental colors prescribed for the year, the couple can also choose their lucky color. For example each Zodiac sign have five elements, Water, Earth, Wood, Fire and Metal. The elements are then symbolized by different colors like Blue for water; Yellow for earth; Green for Wood; Red, Pink, Orange and others of the same shade for Fire; then White or Gold for metal. (Consult Chinese astrological cycle for the elements of the year you were born)

The Path to Take

According to Feng Shui, year of the rat stipulates three directions that promote luck and harmony. While exchanging vows couples can choose to face North, East or Southeast or the location should at least be at these strategic directions.

After getting the positive aura from the right direction supplement it with proper lighting. A wedding well lighted means a bright future ahead for the couple. Be sure its natural light that lightens the path so choose windows that deliver ample sunrays. But if couples prefer a dim intimate ambiance they can choose candles and mirrors that lights up the space as an alternative.

Another option is to borrow something blue (blue is the Feng Shui color of peace and serenity) from a happy couple with a happy family. Through this the energy of the couple with a happy life will provide positive force to you on your wedding day.

Following the mass celebration or wedding reception, Feng Shui also have some send off ideas to complete the package. Couples can select through the following list to ensure a graceful wedding exit.

Bubbles – fill your surroundings with buoyant bubbles since water is a significant element for this year plus it’s pacifying characteristic makes it the perfect addition on your way to leave the ceremony.

Flower petals – shower of flower petals that signifies the fresh beginning of the couple together.

Grains – tossing grains and beans as a symbol of fertility and wish for children.

Spread some luck

From zodiacs to directions, lets introduce souvenirs that according to the Chinese beliefs bring luck for the couple. Start off with Mandarin Duck figurines, like Lovebirds when these warm-blooded animals fall in love it will be forever. If mandarin ducks are still single they can live alone but when the mating season started and the duck found its pair, they are bound to stay together until the rest of their lives. Try separating one from the other then the ducks truly die of loneliness and longing to their better half.

Another one is the Chinese character Swang Hei, which means double happiness this character, is formed like a couple. In ancient Chinese history, this Chinese character depicts the story of a couple that was separated out of need but was still united because of love.

Numbers

When it comes to counting guests, it is best to gather even number of attendees, because odd numbers don’t go well with a couple for it represents third party. So guests should be divisible by two if you don’t want intruders on your relationship.

Finally, August 08, 2008, which comes every thousand years, is indeed a lucky day for the Chinese and an auspicious date for couples to exchange their vows. Eight is really a fortunate number for Feng Shui for like a circle it depicts an endless journey bound from end to end.
